APA (7th ed.) Citation Style Guide: Articles

Article citations include:

  • Author or authors. The surname is followed by first initials.
  • Year of publication of the article (in round brackets).
  • Article title.
  • Journal title (in italics).
  • Volume of journal (in italics).
  • Issue number of journal in round brackets (no italics).
  • Page range of article.
  • DOI or URL is hyperlinked. "Retrieved from" is omitted.
  • The first line of each citation is left adjusted. Every subsequent line is indented 5-7 spaces.

"When periodical information (e.g., volume number, issue number, page range) is missing, omit it from the reference."

ERIC Documents not from Journals

ERIC contains some content that was not published in a journal, and is only available by accessing ERIC, such as manuscripts, policy briefs, and similar. The following provides guidance for creating references for those documents. 

Regular journal articles in this database should be cited as a journal article with a DOI or a journal article without a DOI, whichever is relevant.

Canadian Points of View Reference Centre: In-House Documents

The Canadian Points of View database produces some in-house documents, which are not available anywhere else.

Regular journal articles in this database should be cited as a journal article with or without a DOI, whichever is relevant.

When there is no author for an article, the title moves to the first position of the reference entry followed by a period.
