ASA (7th ed.) Citation Style Guide: Tables and Figures

Tables

  • Number tables consecutively throughout the text
  • Tables should appear in text and on a separate sheet at the end of the publication
  • include a descriptive, accurate, and comprehensive title for each table - who/what, when, and where information
  • All columns and rows should have a heading; avoid using acronyms; can use symbols (%) or words (percent)

Figures

"Visual art - figures, illustrations, and photographs - are published in ASA journals only when they add substantially to the research being presented" (American Sociological Association Style Guide, 7th ed., 2022:79).

If including any of these,

  • number consecutively throughout the publication
  • include a descriptive title
  • use high-resolution figures
  • secure copyright before publication in any ASA journal
