Frequently Asked Questions

DOESN'T COPYRIGHT LAW ALLOW ME TO USE ANY CONTENT FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES?

While Canadian copyright law provides an exemption for educational use, a vendor may impose a license agreement that further restricts use of their product under contract law. Refer to the specific vendor Terms Of Use.

CAN I DOWNLOAD AN EBOOK OR STREAMING VIDEO?

The ability to download a digital title depends on the specific license agreement the Library has with a vendor or distributor. In addition, further restrictions may be placed in title by title cases, as negotiated with the original copyright holder.

Certain agreements require that a title be "locked up" for a given number of days, in order to permit downloading of titles. The minimum lock up period is 7 days. Due to the timely nature of academic research, the Library has chosen not to opt for download capabilities at this time. Such is the case for EBook titles acquired from Coutts.

WHY DOESN'T THE LIBRARY HAVE ANY KINDLE BOOKS?

The Kindle terms of agreement states that Kindle Content is limited "solely for your personal, non-commercial use".

WHAT ABOUT NETFLIX?

The Terms of Use states "the Netflix service, and any content viewed through our service, are for your personal and non-commercial use only and we grant you a limited, non exclusive, non transferable, license to access the Netflix service for that purpose."
