Evaluate Your Sources: PAARSE
To help identify appropriate and useful sources for your project, follow PAARSE:
Purpose
- What is the purpose of this information? Why was it created?
- Consider the reason it was written/published – does this alter the message or meaning? Any conflict of interest?
Author
- Where did the information come from? Who wrote the resource? Can you identify the author?
- What kind of expertise do they have? (Lived experience? Subject expert? Indigenous Elder?)
- For AI – if it provides references or suggested resources, do they exist or were they made up?
Accuracy
- Can you verify the accuracy of information? / Is there any way for you to verify where it originally came from and who wrote it?
- For AI – if it provides references or suggested resources, do they exist or were they made up?
Relational
- Are external sources and/or ideas contextualized, credited and cited?
Suitability
- Is it relevant to your discipline of study and suitable for your research question/topic/assignment guidelines?
Erasure
- Whose knowledge is prioritized and cited? Whose is missing and/or erased?
- Can you identify any gaps or biases? What might be some other perspectives on this topic that are not cited or discussed?
- Does the system or tool you used to find the information systematically exclude and/or prioritize some voices over others?
