Student Research Poster Presentations

Guidelines, tips, templates and more about how to create an academic research poster

What is a research poster?

The purpose of a research poster is to visually represent the general overviewdata, and most relevant findings of a research project. Typically, research posters accompany an oral presentation of the project conducted, but should also be able to independently represent the research (OWL Purdue. Research Poster Overview).

  • Important information should be readable from about 10 feet away
  • Title is short and draws interest
  • Word count of about 300 to 800 words
  • Text is clear and to the point
  • Use of bullets, numbering, and headlines make it easy to read
  • Effective use of graphics, color and fonts
  • Consistent and clean layout
  • Includes acknowledgments, your name and institutional affiliation

  • If you are a student or student group presenting a poster at Student Research Day, send your poster to the growing collection of excellent student research in the online Student Research collection in DOOR.

Information on submission can be found here under the heading 'Student Research Day Posters'.

  • NOTE:  if your poster design includes QR codes or hyperlinks other than DOIs - they must go to a permanent web location, such as an institutional repository or journal website.

    • Students’ Sharepoint account, Drop-box, blog sites and other personal web locations are not considered permanent.
    • If your QR code / links point to an impermanent location then your poster must be accompanied by a digital version of all QR-coded/linked content to be eligible for DOOR.
