Podcasting

A podcasting guide that lists equipment, software, and resources that Douglas College offers to help you produce a podcast.

Essential Equipment

Your podcast's impact is defined by its soundscape, as that's how your audience experiences it. The following pieces are essential to your success:

Microphone

Opt for an external microphone, don't rely on built in phone or computer microphones. Dynamic microphones work well for multi-person recordings, while condenser microphones offer a broader frequency response and heightened sensitivity to rapid pitch changes. In most cases, dynamic microphones are the recommended choice.

Headphones

Closed-back headphones are recommended as they provide better sound isolation than earbuds. You will want to hear yourself speak and catch the audio being recorded while ensuring that live microphones cannot pick up the sound coming from your headphones.

Computer with sound editor

Of course, you'll need an internet connection to upload your podcast. But before reaching that step, you'll need to save your .mp3 or .wav files and craft your podcast using audio editing software like Audacity.

Recording space

The environment in which you record will prove to be very important. It is not always easy to find a quiet controlled space. Equipment can help with noise reduction and clarity. Use soundproofing or acoustic panels to control echoes and minimize background noise. Likewise, proper microphone stands with silent motion and shock mounts will reduce unwanted noise from recording gear. And of course pop filters can significantly improve the recorded voice audio.

Remember, a podcast's success is as much about what your audience hears as it is about what you say.
