The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) are a set of 17 goals that address a wide range of social issues, such as poverty, inequality, climate change, peace, and justice. Open pedagogy places the student at the centre of the learning process in a more engaging, authentic, and collaborative learning environment to achieve social justice in the community. Put these two together and you have the award-winning UN Sustainable Development Goals Open Pedagogy Fellowship. Douglas College joined as an institutional partner in the UN SDG Open Pedagogy Fellowship in 2023.
The Faculty Fellowship is an international partnership in which faculty work in interdisciplinary teams across institutions to maximize global impact. Successful applicants from participating institutions will be assembled into 10 teams of 2-4 people based on compatible goals. Each fellowship team is expected to design three renewable assignments over the summer, at least two of which are expected to be deployed in the classes of each fellowship team in the Fall Semester. Faculty are expected to present on their proposed assignments prior to their deployment. A student showcase takes place during the Spring Semester in which a select number of students will present on how they improved their communities and achieved global justice through the UN SDG framework. Training and support for assignment development is offered by the Leadership Team. See this Open Pedagogy Fellowship toolkit for examples of past assignments.
UN SDG Open Pedagogy Fellows will be required to attend a kick-off meeting and three additional meetings throughout the summer:
