APA (7th ed.) Citation Guide for Health Sciences

General Notes for Book Citations

NOTE: APA style, as set out in its blog entries for books and book chapters does not require that Canadian editions include any citation details for the original edition (e.g., US/UK etc) from which it was adapted.

Per the exemplars below, provide (only) the citation information relevant to the edition that was used.  Additional instructions from the blog include:

  • Use the same format for both print books and ebooks.

  • For a book with multiple editors, use the abbreviation “(Eds.)” after the names, followed by a period. See our additional edited book examples for an edited book with a single editor.

  • Use the copyright date shown on the book’s copyright page as the year of publication in the reference, even if the copyright date is different than the release date.

  • When citing an entire book, include any edition information in parentheses after the title, without italics.

    • When citing a book chapter, include any edition information in the same parentheses as the page range of the chapter, separated with a comma.

  • If the book / chapter includes a DOI, include the DOI in the reference after the publisher name, but do not include the publisher location.

  • When citing an ebook is from an academic research database without a DOI or stable URL, end the book reference after the publisher name. Do not include the name of the database in the reference.

    • The reference in this case is the same as for a print book.
