Academic Integrity

Academic Integrity and Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is any type of tool that generates text, video, or images based on a prompt you provide. AI includes:

  • Editing software (Grammarly)
  • Paraphrasing generators (Quillbot)
  • Text generators (ChatGPT)
  • Image generators (DALL-E)
  • Predictive text (suggestions in Outlook)

While AI can seem like a useful tool for writing assignments or completing coursework, it can also be a source of academic dishonesty. Using AI can lead to issues like:

  • Inaccurate, misleading, biased, outdated or offensive information
  • Repetitive or poorly worded content
  • Inaccurate or missing citations or references
  • Legal and ethical issues

Using AI in your course assignments may not demonstrate that you understand the course or the content. It can also be considered cheating, and lead to an academic integrity violation.

Questions about using Artificial Intelligence tools

Can I use AI in my course assignment?

Unless your instructor specifically allows you to use AI tools (ChatGPT, Grammarly, DALL-E, et cetera) in your assignment, you could be violating the academic integrity policy.

Can my instructor tell that I used AI?

Possibly. There are tools to detect when artificial intelligence tools have been used to create content, though their reliability is still unknown. Your instructor also knows you and your writing style, and how much you know about a topic. Additionally, they are an expert in their field and can often tell when information is inaccurate or made up.

If I am using AI, can I cite it?

If you are allowed to use an AI tool in your assignment, you still need to cite it. You can find more information about citing AI tools in the Library's citation guides. You can also read about how different citation styles are addressing AI tools here:
