GEOG 2311: Urban Environmental Sustainability

This guide has been designed to support students in Geography 2311 throughout the course and with preparation for their course assignments.

Cities and Towns

City websites are often a good place to start to see what documents they have on the subject of sustainability. The following is a link to city websites in the Lower Mainland.

Vancouver: Official homepage for the city
- Urban Planning, zoning & development: Includes links to urban planning documents, zoning bylaws, development applications
- Vancouver Open Data: Datasets, maps, FOI forms, bylaws, internal audit documents and more

Burnaby: Click the City Services tab for planning documents, bylaws & zoning information, project plans/initiatives, public safety

Surrey: See the City Services section for bylaws, land use & development documents, policing & water system. The Business & Economic Development section has economic plans and strategies for doing business in Surrey.

New Westminster: Of particular interest are the Planning, Building & Development and Business and Economy pages.

Coquitlam: See the City Planning & Development section for community plans by neighbourhood sector. The site also includes development statistics and information about heritage planning. The Resident Services section has information about city infrastructure and environmental issues.

Richmond: See the Planning, Building & Development for the city's official community plan and links to its affordable housing strategies, bylaws, planning documents and transportation planning.

North Vancouver City: Key sections are City Services and Property and Development.
- North Vancouver District is a municipality that is distinct from the city of North Vancouver and has its own Property and Development bylaws/documents, Permits & Licences processes and governmental structure.

Delta: The Environment & Sustainability section links to the city's sustainability plans, water protection & conservation issues, Burns Bog and more. The Homes & Development section has information and application forms relating to sustainable development and construction.

Port Coquitlam: The City Government section is the main source for bylaws, capital projects, budgets and planning documents. Click the City Publications link to find the community plan and environmental strategic plan.

Maple Ridge: Most of the municipal documents, statistics and reports are in the Your Government section.

City of Langley: The City Services section links to the city's bylaws, permits and taxation documentation. See the City Hall > Reports & Plans section for annual reports, strategic plans and FOI request forms.
- Langley Township is a municipality that is distinct from the city of Langley and has its own bylaws, planning and regulation documents.

West Vancouver: The Government section links to financial information, bylaws, FOI requests and council minutes. The planning and infrastructure project documents are in the Home, Building and Property section.
