STGE 1207 Research Guide: Resources in Libraries

Books and Magazines in Libraries

Books can be useful for gaining information on the actual construction of props.  Here are a few subjects to try using in SUBJECT searches in the Library Catalogue:

Stage props                         Stage machinery
Scene painting                    Theatres -- Stage-setting and scenery
Furniture                              Interior decoration
Upholstery                           Antiques

If you are looking for photos and illustrations of buildings, people, objects, etc. of a particular country and time period, also consider books on the culture and social conditions during that time. Try using these subjects in the Library Catalogue:

Social conditions                  Social life and customs                        Social history

For example: social conditions and Canada and 19th century

Be sure to check the catalogue record to see if the book contains illustrations. The description field would mention ill as indicated below:

The subject pictorial works is also useful for finding books with photos.  For example: New Westminster and pictorial works.

Public Library Collections

Public libraries serve the information needs of the community in which they are situated and  therefore have a wider range of materials than academic libraries do, which support the specific curriculum of the institution.  Try searching the catalogues of the Vancouver Public Library and the New Westminster Public Library for books with illustrations.

Also, make use of the public libraries' article databases, which will be more popular in nature and lead you to magazines that contain more visual material.
