GEOG 1190 & 2290 Research Guide: Getting Started

Links to resources in Geography, research tutorials, information of citing sources, and more.

Background Information on Your Topic

Reference books, such as encyclopedias and handbooks, are good starting points for research.  They may be available in print or online.  They can help you refine your topic and select words and phrases (search terms) to use in your searches. The Oxford Dictionary of Geography is available online through the Douglas College Library.

Use the Library Catalogue to find other books.  Begin with a KEYWORD search using words and phrases that describe your topic.  Library catalogues are all structured in the same manner, so once you know how to use one library's catalogue, you'll be able to find material in any library.

Articles Published in Academic Journals

Try searching the ScienceDirect database for articles from scholarly and academic journals. If you are not on campus, you'll have to login with your last name and Douglas College student ID number before using the databases.

CBCA Complete will lead you to articles published in Canadian journals.

Geography Journals

To view a list of the geography journals available both in print and online through the Douglas College Library, use the Library Catalogue

Do a SUBJECT search in the Library Catalogue for this (exactly as you see it here):     geography -- periodicals
